How do I choose my baby’s pacifier?
It’s very important to choose a pacifier that suits your baby’s age and that’s made up of BPA-free material which could negatively affect their health.
Moreover, make sure that the pacifier’s shield does not cause suffocation for the baby, that the pacifier is suitable for sterilizing and that it won’t affect your baby’s teeth growth. Avoid pacifiers from unknown brands as it might cause suffocation if the nipple comes off.
What criteria to choose your baby’s pacifier?
Here are my tips:
- After you buy the pacifier, make sure it is not flawed. Make sure it's not scratched or the nipple comes off early.
- Make sure to read the instructions on the pacifier’s box. For example, some pacifiers may not be sterilizer friendly.
- Sterilize the pacifier before using it, but avoid using harsh chemicals. Stick to only water or steam.
- Don’t hang any necklaces or ropes to the pacifier to avoid shocking hazards.
- Replace the pacifier every 4 weeks or if you recognize that it has any new deformities.
- Don’t put water, sugar, honey, or any other foods on the pacifier as your baby should rely on breastfeeding or formula exclusively until the age of 6 months.
- Don’t give pacifiers to your baby if he’s suffering from breastfeeding or weight problems.
- Never give a pacifier before breastfeeding, since it will make your baby feel full or sleepy. Best time to give your baby a pacifier is before naps or sleep time. The American Association of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends giving babies pacifiers before naps to minimize the risk of sudden deaths.
- Don’t give your baby a pacifier at random times and without any reason. Make sure all your baby’s needs are met before choosing the pacifier as an option.
Will pacifiers affect my breastfeeding?
The short answer is: YES if given before 3-6 weeks. It is preferred not to give a pacifier to your baby unless he’s gotten used to breastfeeding. Otherwise, it will affect the baby’s breastfeeding response and your milk production. Therefore, you should wait for 3-6 weeks before giving a pacifier to your baby. If you notice a weight change for your baby after having the pacifier, it is recommended to pause it until you figure out the reason.
When should I stop giving my baby a pacifier?
Studies show that pacifiers should be stopped after the age of 2 years, as they may have negative effects on his teeth’ growth. Other experts explain that pacifiers could induce ear infections for babies after the age of 6 months. Therefore, the decision is yours to make!
