How to prepare baby formula?

  • Always write the date that you opened the formula can when you opened it on the top lid. It is recommended to consume formula 3-4 weeks after it has been opened.
  • Make sure to sterilize your baby’s bottle, all of its parts, and wash your hands well.
  • Boil, wait till its temperature is suitable, then add formula to it. This step is not only to purify the water but also so the water is on the right temperature to kill the bacteria present in the formula.
  • It’s very important to inform your doctor about your baby’s formula type, as you should never give your baby non-approved milk. Your doctor is responsible for the type and quantity of milk you should feed your child.
  • Do not use more/ less than the recommended amount of formula and/or water for your baby.
  • Follow the instructions present on the formula can to identify the quantity that suits your baby’s age.
  • Don’t use any spoon at home. Only use the scoop that comes with the formula.
  • Test the water’s temperature by placing a drop on your hand before feeding it to your baby.

FAQ about bottle-feeding

How much time should I keep my baby’s bottle at room temperature?

Companies state that you should feed your baby right after you prepare the bottle. On the other hand, CDC declares that it’s acceptable to keep the bottle at room temperature for 2 hours, then 24 hours in the fridge.

Can I keep the left-over milk in the fridge for next time?

The short answer is “No”, never give your baby milk left-over as they can have bacteria from your baby’s saliva.

What about heating my baby’s milk?

Heating formula using a bottle warmer is a good idea. It is also super safe to heat your baby's milk  by placing a closed bottle inside a warm cup.

How to prepare pumped milk?

First and foremost, and like I always recommend, make sure to sterilize all parts which are in direct contact with your baby. Then, add the milk to a BPA-free, clean bag, and close it tightly. A mom’s breast milk is naturally sterilized, so there’s no need to heat it up unless your baby likes it better that way.

You can defrost pumped milk by either putting it in the fridge for 24 hours, or by placing it in a heater on a defrost mode.

Here are extra tips on how to prepare pumped milk:

  • Use only sterilized bags to store your pumped milk.
  • Write down the date, time, quantity, and other information on the bag.
  • You can keep the pumped milk at room temperature for 2-6 hours, 3 days in the fridge, and 3-6 months in the freezer.
  • Place the pumped milk in the back of the fridge so that it stays cool.
  • Do not randomly change the quantity of pumped milk you give to your baby without your doctor’s approval.
