How do I know if my child's weight is normal, overweight or underweight? Answered by Mirna Sabbagh, Adult and Child Nutritionist in Dubai.

I would love to help you figure that out! This article is split between children above the age of 2 and children below the age of 2.

How do I know if my child's weight is normal, overweight, or normal weight? (Child above the age of 2)

Please plug in your Child's date of birth, weight, and height in the following CDC calculator and you will automatically get an answer! The CDC website will tell you if your child's weight is underweight, normal, overweight or obese.

The child's weight is not the only sign of health. Immunity, IQ, Energy levels, diabetes risks are all impacted by the child's diet. The child's diet should be varied and healthy. If you would like to know what is the perfect diet for a child, I highly recommend the child nutrition for all children including picky eatersAs I provide a full meal plan and guidelines for a healthy household.

Below is a sample of the CDC chart BMI/age. The below child is of normal healthy weight.

How do I know if my child's weight is normal, overweight, or normal weight? (Child under the age of 2)

As for children under the age of 2, we can use another website called infant chart or an application called Charts on your phone. On Infant chart the most important thing you need to see is your Child's weight in comparison to their height. This is important as many doctors may miss calculating this measurement.

  • If your child's weight/height provides a result that is above 85% it means they are overweight
  • If your child's weight for height is below 5% it means they are underweight. Anything in between is considered healthy. Plug in your child's weight and height in this link.

You may also check your child's weight in comparison to their age and your child's height in comparison to their age.

If you are worried please remember to talk to your doctor first as weight is not the only measure of health.

Below is a sample of a result for a healthy child.
