Mothers often wonder whether it’s safe to give their babies dairy products in their first year, and express several queries and concerns.
Therefore, today I will give you all your needed answers, and provide tips on giving dairy milk to your baby.
To watch my full video, click on this Link.
Do not give your baby fresh dairy products under the age of 1 year, since it’s heavy to their digestive system, extremely high in proteins, and can’t substitute neither their mom’s milk nor the formula. Also, high calcium levels can affect iron absorption for your baby, which a vital vitamin for babies aged 6-12 months.
According to the American Academy of Pediatricians, you can give babies yogurt and cheese at the age of 6 months but it’s not necessary and can be substituted with the mother’s milk, formula and an adequate healthy food intake.
In case you choose to give your baby yogurt at age of 6 months, make sure it’s in small amounts- quarter to half a cup (4 to 6 spoons), and only 2-3 times a week.
Also, don’t forget to monitor your baby’s digestive system and immunity reaction to dairy products
After the age of 1 year, your baby’s need for calcium increases and hence they can start intaking dairy products. Therefore, you can give your baby fresh dairy products, as long as it’s pasteurized and boiled enough to kill the bacteria within.
Make sure to keep milk in the fridge no longer than 3-4 days (even if it’s long term milk).
While choosing cheese make sure it’s free of artificial flavors and preservatives, has low levels of salt, and is pasteurized. I recommend staying away from ripened cheese, and going for mozzarella, ricotta, and Swiss cheese.
Make sure to read ingredients, and that your daily products are organic are of healthy constituents. For example, most cheese in stores are high in mineral salts and additives, which could harm your baby’s sensitive health
Eventually, your baby’s health is their lifetime foundation; make sure it’s well-preserved!

]]>I’ve heard this sentence countless times throughout my motherhood! Our society gives excuses for literally everything, except a good mom being “good.”
Therefore, today I will explain the importance of having low sugar amounts in your child’s diet, and how to stand against these false norms.
To watch my full video, click on this Link.
Too much sugar for children causes several diseases, like diabetes, obesity, inflammations, immunity, digestive system, blood pressure, and cardiac diseases
Too much sugar leads to picky eating in children. A baby’s taste buds are regulated from his/her birth until the age of 2 years, so if they overate sugar, they would refuse other low-sugar foods like fruits and vegetables.
Having said that, parents should be creating a proper foundation of their baby’s eating habits, by making sure they eat healthy, and minimizing their sugar intakes.
However, the society stands against moms in that matter, thinking they’re depriving their baby of what they love.
But NO, you’re not being a restrictive bad mom.
You might wonder, what if my child is at a birthday, will they stick around the cake? Well YES! Children love cake and that’s totally normal!
Talk with your child about the dangers of having too much sugar despite its sweetness. Don’t be firm or say No.
Give your child their desired needs of sugar, in small amounts, in a single form (only 1 cupcake, muffin, or piece of cake)
After the age of 2 years, you can slightly increase their sugar intake in moderate ways.
Remember that if your child is raised against society’s norms, that doesn’t make you the wrong party. If they criticize or judge you, LAUGH.
You’re a generous hero, and you should be proud and given credit to for supplying your child their healthiest lifestyle.

]]>Vacations are known to be “fun” times, where kids think that it’s a good time to break some rules. Parents usually face new challenges while trying to give food to their child outside of home.
Although it is said to be a hard task, the good news is, it’s not impossible! Vacation can be a fun time while maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Here are some tips to help your kids eat healthy food during vacation:
These foods include fast and processed foods like French fries, pizza and others. Usually, a kids’ menu is rich in refined carbs and processed oil. Children usually accompany these types of foods with vacations and fun, which creates a hard time for parents to give them other healthier alternatives and experiencing new varied foods. This results in dangerous consequences like health problems, weight gain, low immunity, and shortage in their vitamins and minerals intake.
Also, parents should make sure to not give their children sweets and high-sugar foods. Sugary meals and treats supply your kid with an energy boost that only lasts for 30 minutes, and is then followed by a sudden energy crash.
Try talking with your children about trying new foods, and discuss healthier options and various preferences. Children need to learn how to eat properly, so you have to explain why an apple is more important than a chocolate bar, and differentiate essential meals from occasional ones. Listen to your child’s needs and opinions, and offer them compromised food options based on their stated desires.
This helps with improving the physical development of your children, and boosting their overall vacation experience.
It’s very important to give your kids a sense of choice. So instead of ordering them a salad or grilled chicken, let them choose between 3 present healthy options. This will help you in the process of supplying them healthier foods, and give your children’s diet a push by giving them the ability to pick what they want. You’d be surprised by your child’s willingness to choose once given the ability to.
Your children will be less reluctant to eat healthy meals if they were a part of preparing it. Encourage your children to participate in creating new snacks, or in making up their meals.
For example, let them be a part of choosing the vegetables needed for their salad, washing the vegetables, mixing the salad, and adding the flavors and toppings they like. They can also be a part of preparing their meals requirements, opening packages, or helping with healthy desserts.
Vegetables can come in different forms like grilled, steamed or roasted. All these types have different tastes, so you can test what your kids like most and focus on making that type for them. Try adding different spices for their vegetables and foods, and add aside a few dips. You can also decorate your children’s vegetables, play with their foods, and add shapes and colors. This will help boost their overall eating experience and make healthy food more interesting to them.
An effective way of helping your child eat healthy foods is expecting what to eat next. Meal planning helps in getting your child ready for what they will eat and avoid their sense of disappointment.
This will help reduce their reluctance to healthy food, improve your child’s eating habits and give them a set of options to choose upon.
Your child is most influenced by your choices and actions in front of them. So make sure to make healthier eating choices while choosing your snacks, desserts and meals. Keep your eating habits outside similar to what it is at home.
Keep the healthier options closer to your hands than the unhealthy ones, like nuts, fruits and vegetables.

Do not underestimate your child's mental capacity! The child's brain has the capacity to decide the sufficient amount of food needed for the body to develop.
I was told to finish my plate every day! This only taught my stomach to eat beyond its capacity. They would lose the skill of knowing when to stop and the body would lose the capacity to decide: Ok this is enough food and it is sufficient for development. What happens then is that the child would start eating beyond their capacity making them more prone to develop obesity on the longer term.
Forcing them to eat is definitely not the solution. Always consult with your doctor and your dietitian to first make sure they are indeed underweight. Only then we can start working and coming up with healthy solutions to deal with the problem.
Trust your child. Offer them healthy food with a reasonable quantity, and never force them to finish their plate.
Testimonial about Mirna Sabbagh:
"I went to Mirna for a consultation for my daughter for being obese, and she helped through the whole process all while making each member of the family feel comfortable. I told everyone about our success and how she is the best nutritionist in Dubai. I even recommended her for my family members in Jordan and they have done online consultations with her for adult weight loss with great success." - Nour Bouhari

Mothers usually can’t decide how best to feed their baby when he/she starts eating.
This article aims to provide the differences and similarities between the two, and which one would best suit your child!

Baby Led Weaning is a relatively new baby feeding concept that was first used in Britain, then spread internationally. It claims that a baby doesn’t have to start eating solid food as Puree (or mashed food). Instead, actual solid food should be given as long as it is safe to be eaten by a baby. Some of the examples are:
And many others that could be given to the baby directly to eat at the age of 6 months. Also, this method ditches baby rice cereal and Puree machines!
Sounds weird, right?
Well it isn’t at all! In fact, this is a MAJOR misconception; a baby can chew soft food using his/her gums before developing teeth, contrary to popular belief.
You might ask yourself, but won’t the baby suffocate?
To answer that: Studies that compared both babies who had Baby led weaning and Puree, showed no difference in suffocation levels. In fact, suffocation in both cases was mainly caused by parents who left their child alone while eating, or gave them the wrong types and delivery methods of food.
I am a supporter of Baby Led Weaning because:
Whereas I don’t agree with this method because:
Always find a middle point, and make sure your baby starts practicing Baby Led Weaning not more than 8 months of age to avoid future chewing problems.
Food isn’t for fun, a baby needs it for vitamins and minerals! If you don’t supply your baby with his/her needs at that point, you will not be able to compensate in the future and a baby will definitely have vitamin deficiencies.
Figure 2. Source: Pinterest.com
My personal advice is, use logic in all your actions. Don’t go to the extreme with either method, and give your babies what they need!
AAP, WHO and other medical experts recommend that you should not force your baby to eat. Instead, apply “Responsive Feeding” which is the healthier option. Whether you feed your baby advanced textures directly at 6 months, or gradually change from Puree towards more advanced textures, it’s totally fine!

]]>To answer these questions and more, I interviewed Dr. Evelyne Khoraity to discuss the causes of inadequate weight gain in children, its solutions and other lingering questions.
For my full interview with Dr. Evelyne Khoraity, click on this Link.
This is a very important question since weight is a major indicator of the child’s health.
The best way to know if a child is growing normally is to look at growth charts. There is a chart known as the Growth Chart, which indicates the child’s growth based on their age and weight compared to global percentages. If your baby falls between 3-5% and 95-97% it means your child is normal and in the healthy range.
You can enter your Childs details on the following link.
This doesn’t end here, a child’s growth is monitored by their last growth rate history - the overall trend- to compare whether the curve is growing at the same rate “following the curve” or if it’s fluctuating. If the growth percentages are decreasing by time, then this is where our problem lies.
The reasons for that are endless! So I would like to classify them into 3 main causes:
Note: If you want to know if breastfeeding is effective on your child’s growth, weight is the ultimate indicator. If an irregular growth rate is detected, it may be due to low amounts of milk produced, or mechanical problems with the baby while breastfeeding (inability to grab or suck, tiredness…). A knowledgable doctor will be able to tell you where the issue is and you probably have to visit a lactation consultant who can improve your latch and help you with your milk supply.
It is very important to know that the first three months in a baby’s life are the hardest and he/she may cry out for many natural reasons. It is not always being hungry. You don’t always have to worry!
Many parents worry and claim that their child is not gaining enough weight during these ages. What are the procedures and indicators then?
The answer is: Whether it is age Zero or 21, weight and height are the best basis, along with a child’s nutrition.
However, at the age of 1+, a child is too busy discovering their surroundings rather than eating. Hence, they might be too “busy” to eat, bored, or picky eaters.
Besides, parents usually compare their children to others their age, which is mostly wrong. Make sure that every child is different in their habits and growth, so it’s fine as long as it’s healthy.
Note that a growth rate normally decreases by time so that it is:
Also, a growth rate might fluctuate as the child grows, starts going to school and getting sick. That’s totally normal!
Always seek a Pediatrician for accurate results and don’t just depend on your own or your surroundings’ judgments.
There are effective weight gain supplements for children, but they should NOT be given unless their situation requires that. Serious health issues like cystic fibrosis and other weight problems that can’t be solved by food alone are examples where supplements should be given. Other children (which are the most frequent) like picky eaters do not require stimulants or formulas. A healthy long-term solution should be found and applied based on each child’s unique situation.
Try substituting supplements with healthy food like peanut butter, avocados, or and other healthy meals that are rich in calories and don’t cause future eating disorders or obesity.
Note that genetics have a major role in your child’s weight, so don’t try to stuff your child!
Also, do not give medicine, stimulants, or vitamins unless prescribed!
Are there special reasons for that?
The answer is: As long as they’re following a normal curve with their weight gain, it’s normal.
However, if the curve is heading downwards, then there’s a problem. This could be a result of many reasons that include:
Each underlying reason should be excluded by your doctor and you should be given a solution or referral if any of the above options exist.
A blood test is usually not preferable for children. However, if a child clinically appears to be underweight, a picky eater and has an unhealthy diet, then they might require tests to scan vitamin deficiencies.
Some vitamins are needed for babies, like Vitamin D during breastfeeding, or Iron for ages 4-6 months, or for those who are receiving a low amount of formula.
However, for children aged 1 year and more, nutrition is the best source of vitamins! If they have a problem receiving adequate amounts of vitamins and minerals through their food, a blood test is made to specify the needed vitamin rather than giving them multivitamins. Afterward, if the future child’s blood test shows no deficiencies but they are not eating well, then multivitamins are given.
Note that a multivitamin is not a substitute for a healthy diet!
Keep in mind that every child is different and might have different growth rates, appetite, and eating habits!
We hope this information was helpful!

(Cirle Care) :

There is nothing more fun than shopping for your little one! Kindly find below a few items I used with Karim and loved.
Use code: AMAZON15 for 15% off your order.
1. Munchkin feeder:
A baby feeder is an amazing way to get children to eat and munch without worrying about choking. You can put in its fruits or cooked vegetables or even frozen fruits to soothe those teething and painful gums. This is an item I like and recommend often.
2. Cups
Dr Brown's spoutless cup
Babies should be transitioning from bottles to cups at this age so they don't give you an incredibly hard time letting go of the bottle later. Sippy cups are no longer recommended by experts and I much prefer those spoutless cups.
Dr Browns Dr Browns Cheers 360 Cup with Handles Blue, Piece of 1
Opens cups
The ideal scenario will be your baby drinking confidently from an open cup by 18 months, many babies are able to do that way before that. The only way to do so is to start introducing an open cup from 6 months.
One of the open cups I like is this one. Some of the reasons I love them is because they are Food Safe Grade: Non-Toxin Healthy Material, Green timing wheat straw cups are made of natural wheat straw fiber. These are healthy BPA Free & FDA approved.
3. Bibs
I love those cleanable silicon bibs because you can wash them off on the spot. No need for a washing machine or drying them. I had at least 5-6 as many would get lost :D
Tommee Tippee Roll 'n' Go Baby Pouch Drip Catcher Baby Bib, 7+ Months - Blue and Green, 4 Pack
4. High chairs
The choice of high chairs is really important. 4 things you need to look for:
1. A proper place for the baby to rest his/her feet. Make sure it's adjustable
2. A proper back support
3. That the high chair lasts for years to come
4. That the high chair is easily cleanable because it will get SO DIRTY. Usually high chairs come with 2 trays which is convenient so you can remove the tray and clean it and have another one handy.
Do your research as there are high chairs in all price ranges and you can find what you want anywhere on the range. However, just because it's expensive does not mean it's better. Make sure I like this option for high chairs as it can be sued for different ages and has multi usages including being a regular chair and being able to carry it and put it on the regular adult table.
Baby Trend MUV 6-in-1 Custom Dining Chair, Black, Pack of 1
5. Nutricook
So, there are a thousand "baby food" things in the market that are supposed to cook the food for babies. In my opinion, all a mom needs is a regular pot and a regular masher and perhaps a steaming basket that you can find in any kitchen! I explain that in details in my Course.
If however, you would like a more detailed recommendation, I like the Nutricook pot. It comes with a steam basket inside. You can steam food or cook it until it's completely mushed. If you'd like my food processing recommendation, continue to read below. I also like that it is stainless steel and has NO CHEMICAL COATING.
If you already have a pressure cooker or do not want to buy a pressure cooker, just make sure you have a steam basket.
6. Blender
One of my favorite items in my kitchen is the Kenwood hand blender. It is SO quick and so efficient and after years of buying things and tossing them out, I can say this is one of the cheapest and best items I have gotten. if you do not want to invest into a processor or hand blender, a simple food masher such as a potato masher will do! Sometimes, even a fork will solve the problem!
Kenwood Hand Blender Triblade System,600W HDP109WG
7. Mat
For babies to be adventurous eaters, they've got to make a mess. It can be stressful and annoying at first but so worth it. As mothers, what we can do is create a set up to make the mess more tolerable. That's why a Mat under the high chair makes a gigantic difference. There are many on the market, I chose this mat because it looks practical. You can use it for other things too like messy play.
8. Plates and spoons
3 things you need to look for in plates for babies
1. That they are a curved and not flat so babies can learn to scoop food
2. They are made of bpa free material
3. Ideally the plate has suction and sticks to the tray that way your baby can't toss it down
Silicone Feeding Food Plate Tray Dishes Food Holder for Baby Toddler Kid Children, Lime
As for spoons, I recommend a soft tip spoon. They come in different sizes, there are short ones that are easy to hold for babies and long ones that are great for the mom and dad to help. I couldn't find the size online however these seem to be a good option.
9. Cutting boards
When you have a baby, you must be careful with cross contamination. For example, you should not cut fruits and vegetables on the same board as chicken or meat. Any cutting board will be fine. I personally recently got the Joseph Joseph cutting boards because they are bamboo, durable, also gorgeous. You can however get any cutting board.
Joseph Joseph 60141 Index Bamboo Cutting Board Set of 3 Boards with Storage Stand Non-Slip
10. Storage containers
I like glass containers a lot because plastic containers (Tupperwares) can leach chemicals from the plastic into the food. So I switched to completely glass containers. You can buy any brand you like. Make sure it is microwave safe, oven safe and dishwasher safe. I love that I can heat food directly into the oven with my storage containers. I also use them for fruits and vegetables. They are found in all sizes, I use the smaller sizes for crushed nuts and seeds, spices, and salad dressings and they can be great for baby food containers when you go out or even just for serving.
Aside from the fact that they are safe, I love that their color does not get stained and they do not stink the same way the plastic ones do

What does Mirna, adult and child nutritionist think about giving powdered milk after the age of 1?
Well, Mirna thinks powdered milk is expensive and definitely not needed as part of the healthy toddler's diet. Her opinion coincides with the CDC, AAP, and WHO! They all think toddler formula is not needed as part of a healthy child's diet. They even say IF you have a picky eater, you can opt for a multivitamin instead. There are much more details below.
Here is a quote directly from AAP about toddler milk:
Toddler milk. Toddler milks, often marketed by formula companies as "transitional" to wean from breast milk or formula, are unnecessary and potentially harmful to young children. These products contain added sugars and may fill a baby's stomach up so he or she is not hungry for healthier foods.
This is one of the most asked questions I get as a nutritionist for kids. Some parents think powdered milk is healthier and others think fresh milk is not suitable.
The answer to this question is simple. Read the ingredients. As I read the ingredients of this particular powdered milk, I find: skimmed cow milk, vegetable oil, corn syrup, sucrose, lactose, milk fat, honey, oligofructose, calcium carbonate, emulsifier, lactobacillus, vanilla, vitamins and minerals.
The AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) supports this opinion and says:
The added oils and sugars are not what a child needs at all. They can have a negative health impact on the child later on. A high sugar intake is associated with a higher risk of obesity, diabetes, and lowered immunity. Processed oils also have a negative impact on the body including increased inflammation which affects the heart and increases the risk of heart disease.
Our main objective as parts is to provide our kids with wholesome foods and to stay away from unhealthy ingredients such as sugars and processed oils.
Okay, now how about the fresh milk? What is inside?
Fresh milk contains the following ingredients: Fresh cow milk and vitamin D.
The list is very simple and free from added sugars and unhealthy oils. Please check the specific brand in the supermarket that you have.
The benefit of powdered formula milk is that it has ADDED vitamins and minerals. This is great if your child's diet is missing vitamins and minerals. However, you can skip it all together and simple give a multivitamin if your child's diet is really inadequate. Below is what the AAP has to say:
So you have a few options:
If your child has normal eating habits and is eating well, you can give them fresh cow's milk for the extra vitamin D it has.
If your child does not have a healthy diet and is not getting the necessary vitamins and minerals, you can give them the formula as it has these vitamins as supplements. Alternatively, you can give your child cow milk and multivitamins on the side if you wish to avoid the formula and the vegetable oil it could have.
Remember different products have different ingredients. You might also find a powdered product which only contains dehydrated cow's milk along with added vitamins and minerals only. Or a multivitamin. The most important find is to read the labels before making a choice.
At the end, it is your decision. You be the judge. Assess your child’s needs and decide accordingly!
In fact, powdered formula (toddler milk) is simply dehydrated milk with added sugars or fats. So it terms of digestion, it is the same! It's the same proteins found in both but one has been dehydrated and one isn't. So there is no advantage in terms of digestions. They both have around 7g of protein per serving!
After the age of 1 it is recommended that a child does not take more than 750 ml of milk per day as it can affect his intake of other food groups and therefor his health and growth. 750 ml is an average of 3 servings (250ml cups) of milk. This is re-affirmed by the CDC, AAP, and most health organizations.
Toddlers who are not overweight should have full fat cow's milk as children need more fat and also the skimmed milk contains more protein which is not what the child needs. This opinion is agreed upon by most health agencies.
I would definitely recommend full fat but preferably organic milk for your child unless you notice their weight is increasing quickly and they are overweight or obese which you can check in a different article.
Well, after the age of 1, the only reason you really needs cow's milk is because it's a source of lots of vitamins and minerals mostly Calcium. Luckily though, a healthy toddler diet will provide the majority of the vitamins and minerals (except Calcium and Vitamin D). So, we still need 2-3 servings of calcium rich foods. Calcium rich foods such as milk contain 250 mg of calcium per day and the child needs around 750 mg.
The good news is, nowadays, almost all the milk found In the supermarket is fortified with calcium. You want to see that the milk you have such as coconut milk or almond milk or oat milk contains 250mg of calcium per cup (per 240 ml) and most of them do.
Yogurt can also serve as a calcium source giving the same amount of calcium per serving. In addition, white beans, sardines, sesame seeds, sesame paste, chia seeds, kale and salmon are all great sources of calcium as well. A nutritionist can help you ensure your child is getting 100% of their calcium needs if your child does not consume dairy. Aim for 750 mg of calcium per day or 1000 for older kids.
I breastfed my son for 2 years and after he turned 2 I gave him fresh organic cow's milk and I still do until today. I will talk about why I prefer organic milk in a separate post.
I hope this answers your question!
